Grey Heron Swallows Fish in Bali Wet Season

Bright afternoon light falls through dense green foliage, breaking into irregular patches of gold and deep shadow across a grey heron's plumage. The bird stands low over water with its long neck arched as it forces a silver fish down its throat. Feathers press tight against the distended esophagus, showing the texture of wet plumage. Clear blue sky peeks through gaps in the canopy above. Droplets rest on the beak and rest on nearby reeds, catching the dappled illumination. The fish's silver scales flash briefly against the darker feathers before disappearing entirely into the bird's mouth.
