Kingfisher Erupts From Water With Fish in beside a tidal inlet in Belize

Kingfisher Erupts From Water With Fish

by Alyssa Nava

Vibrant blue feathers flash against the murky green of a tidal inlet in Belize as a kingfisher breaks the surface. Droplets of water hang suspended in the soft, overcast light, catching the dull glow of the late afternoon sky. The bird grips a silver fish firmly in its beak, its talons still submerged. A thin layer of light fog drifts across the water, blurring the distant mangrove roots that line the shore. The dry season leaves the surrounding vegetation sparse and dusty, against the wet, chaotic spray erupting around the bird. The fish scales shimmer briefly before sinking, while the kingfisher’s sharp black eye remains fixed forward.
