Heron Stalking in Winter Twilight Shallows

by Gary Goodman

Cool blue light saturates the shallow water where a grey heron stands motionless. The bird’s long legs disappear into the muddy bottom, while its neck stretches forward in a rigid S-curve. Heat haze shimmers above the surface, distorting the reflection of the bird’s white underbelly and dark wing feathers. Surrounding reeds stand brittle and brown against the indigo sky, their tips catching the last fading light. The low angle emphasizes the heron’s towering silhouette against the horizon. One ripples spreads from the bird’s beak, breaking the glassy water into sharp, angular fragments that catch the blue twilight. The air above the mud glows with a faint, wavering distortion, marking the cold stillness of the season.
