Harpy Eagle with Sloth at Reed Bed Edge in at the edge of a reed bed in South Korea

Harpy Eagle with Sloth at Reed Bed Edge

by Herbert Franco

Late summer light diffuses softly through low-hanging clouds over a dense stand of tall reeds. A massive harpy eagle stands at the water's edge, its dark grey wings folded tight against a white chest barred with fine brown stripes. The bird grips a brown, shaggy sloth in its heavy black talons, the prey's limbs dangling limp beneath the raptor's talons. Green reed stalks rise vertically behind the eagle, creating a textured wall of vegetation that fades into a grey, overcast sky. The water below reflects the pale grey of the clouds and the dark silhouette of the bird. one drop of water rests on the tip of a reed stalk in the immediate foreground, mirroring the stillness of the moment.
