Moonlit Heron on Wind-Scoured Dakar Ridge

Cold silver dawn light washes over a shallow pond nestled on a wind-scoured ridge near Goree Island, Dakar. A grey heron stands motionless at the water's edge, its long legs partially submerged in the still surface. The sky above holds a pale, pre-sunrise glow that reflects sharply in the dark water. Humid air lingers after rain, visible as a faint mist clinging to the dry, scrubby grasses surrounding the pond. The heron's feathers appear sleek and dark against the pale reflection of the moon hanging low in the eastern sky. Ripples disturb the water only where the bird's beak breaks the surface, sending small concentric circles outward. The wet stones along the bank glisten under the dim light, marking the boundary between land and water.
