Frosted Telescope Eyepiece at Dawn in Ecuador in beside a tidal survey transect in Ecuador

Frosted Telescope Eyepiece at Dawn in Ecuador

by Mildred Austin

Thick white frost coats the rim and lens of a black telescope eyepiece, forming intricate crystalline patterns against the dark metal. The glass remains partially clear, revealing a faint reflection of the gray mist that fills the air. Behind the instrument, blurred shapes of metal stakes and tape markers define a tidal survey transect on damp, rocky ground. The light is soft and diffuse, typical of a predawn winter morning, casting no harsh shadows. Condensation beads on the lower housing where the metal meets the cold air. The frost texture is sharp and granular, clinging to every edge of the optical tube. One strand of dried grass rests on the ground near the base of the tripod leg.
