Iceland Moraine Wall at Dawn Light in along a wave-cut shoreline in Iceland

Iceland Moraine Wall at Dawn Light

by Abigail Brady

Early spring thaw reveals a jagged wall of glacial moraine rising from the wave-cut shoreline. The heavy overcast sky casts a flat, cool gray light across the landscape, while a low sun strikes the horizon haze with a faint, diffuse glow. The moraine itself is a chaotic mix of dark volcanic rock, pale gravel, and patches of melting snow clinging to crevices. Water pools in the depressions between boulders, reflecting the muted sky. In the distance, layers of the coastline recede into a soft haze, showing the vast scale of the geologic formation. The texture of the rocks is rough and weathered, against the smooth, wet surfaces of the sand and ice.
