Frosted Telescope Eyepiece at Dawn in on a wind-scoured research platform in Tibet

Frosted Telescope Eyepiece at Dawn

by Geraldine Humphrey

Thick white frost coats the black metal rim of a telescope eyepiece, transforming the glass into an opaque, crystalline surface. The instrument rests on a weathered steel platform, its bolts and rivets sharp against the soft ice. Low winter sun paints the horizon in pale violet and gray, cutting through the haze of low-hanging clouds that obscure the distant mountain peaks. Snow dusts the platform's grating, and the cold air seems to freeze the very light. A thin layer of frost spreads across the eyepiece barrel, ending in a sharp, jagged edge where the metal meets the glass. The symmetrical alignment of the scope points directly toward the glowing sliver of sunrise breaking through the Tibetan plateau mist.
