Misty Dawn Ice Wedges on Iqaluit Shore in along a wave-cut shoreline near Iqaluit

Misty Dawn Ice Wedges on Iqaluit Shore

by Johnny Cobb

Thick white mist clings to a steep permafrost cliff face where horizontal ice wedge layers reveal themselves in stark contrast to the surrounding earth. The shoreline below shows evidence of wave erosion, with damp stones and shallow water lapping against the base. Endless summer light falls through the heavy fog, casting a soft, diffused glow that eliminates sharp shadows. The ice appears as translucent blue-gray bands embedded within the brown sediment, their edges smoothed by wind and melting. A layer of low-lying mist obscures the horizon, merging the water with the sky. The texture of the exposed earth is rough and crumbly, while the ice surfaces look slick and cold. At the cliff's edge, a small patch of dark, wet soil anchors the composition against the pale backdrop.
