Dugong Grazing Seagrass in California Coastal Waters
Sunlight penetrates the clear blue water, illuminating a large dugong as it feeds on a dense bed of green seagrass. The animal's smooth, gray skin reflects the midmorning brightness filtering down from the surface. Tiny suspended particles glitter throughout the water column, creating a sparkling effect around the creature's flippers. The seagrass sways gently in the current, forming a textured carpet along the sandy bottom. The water's clarity reveals the distinct shape of the dugong's snout pressing into the vegetation. Fine silt rises slightly from the seabed near the grazing area, mixing with the floating light. One shadow stretches beneath the animal, grounding it against the pale sand floor.
