Dugong Grazing on Seagrass in Fiji Turquoise Water in through kelp fronds beside a rocky shelf in Fiji

Dugong Grazing on Seagrass in Fiji Turquoise Water

by Riley Melton

Sunlight pierces the exceptionally clear shallow water, illuminating a massive dugong as it feeds on green seagrass beds. The animal moves slowly beside a rugged rocky shelf, its gray skin against the vibrant turquoise surface. Long kelp fronds sway gently in the foreground, partially obscuring the view and adding depth to the composition. Tiny bubbles rise from the seagrass stems where the dugong grazes, disrupting the otherwise still water. The wet season light creates bright, sharp reflections on the rippling surface above. A small patch of sand glows beneath the creature's belly, visible through the transparent water column.
