Columnar Basalt Cliffs in Alberta Winter Valley

by Xavier Logan

Hexagonal basalt columns rise vertically from the valley floor, their dark grey faces catching the sharp midmorning sun. Low-hanging clouds drape the horizon, casting soft shadows across the uneven rock surfaces. A thin layer of snow dusts the upper ledges, highlighting the geometric precision of the stone formations. The wide valley stretches out beneath the cliffs, its muted greens and browns against the cool tones of the rock. Textures vary from smooth, weathered faces to rough, fractured edges where erosion has taken hold. The stillness of the landscape is palpable, with no movement to disrupt the ancient geometry. at the edge reveals a small patch of exposed soil clinging to a narrow ledge, untouched by the surrounding snow.
