Basalt Columns Standing Against Evening Floodplain in across a floodplain after rain in British Columbia

Basalt Columns Standing Against Evening Floodplain

by Genevieve Kirkland

Dark hexagonal basalt columns rise vertically from the edge of a wet, expansive floodplain in British Columbia. Late spring light reflects softly off the shallow rainwater, creating a muted silver sheen across the foreground. Low-hanging grey clouds press against the cliff face, diffusing the early evening sun into a cool, even glow. The stone surfaces appear rough and weathered, against the smooth, mirror-like water. A few patches of fresh green grass rest on the base of the columns, while the floodplain stretches flat and empty toward the horizon. The vertical rhythm of the rock formations anchors the left third of the view, leaving the right side open to the damp, wind-swept expanse.
