Basalt Columns Silhouetted Against Blue Evening Sky in across a floodplain after rain near Seomyeon, Busan

Basalt Columns Silhouetted Against Blue Evening Sky

by Cheryl Clements

Dark, geometric basalt columns rise vertically from the damp ground, their hexagonal faces absorbing the fading light. The sky above transitions from a deep indigo to a faint violet, offering a stark backdrop to the black stone. A thin rim of cool light traces the upper edges of the rock formations, separating them from the darkening horizon. Beyond the immediate wall of stone, the wet floodplain stretches out, reflecting the subtle sky tones in shallow puddles left by recent rain. The dry season has stripped vegetation to bare earth and scattered rocks, leaving the texture of the ground rough and matte. Layers of distant hills fade into the shadow, showing vast, silent depth under a perfectly clear sky.
