Basalt Pipes on Cliff After Rain Near Lisbon

by Cindy Hogan

Copper-toned light spills across a rugged sea cliff where hexagonal basalt columns rise like ancient organ pipes. The stone surfaces gleam wet from recent rain, their dark grey faces against the pale foam of drying seawater trapped in crevices. Below, a flooded floodplain stretches toward the horizon, reflecting the low orange sky and heavy grey clouds hovering just above the waterline. The dry season leaves the surrounding grasses brittle and straw-colored, scattered with small pools of standing water. From this high vantage point, the geometric precision of the rock formation stands stark against the soft, chaotic spread of the wetland. One dark shadow falls across the base of the nearest column, marking the edge of the sun's descent.
