Basalt Organ Pipes Sea Cliff Midday Panorama in across a wide valley floor near Tel Aviv

Basalt Organ Pipes Sea Cliff Midday Panorama

by Patsy Roberson

Vertical columns of dark basalt rise in rigid unison from the edge of a steep sea cliff, their hexagonal faces catching the harsh, direct light of midday. The rock surface appears rough and weathered, against the smooth, pale valley floor stretching far below toward the distant horizon. A perfectly clear, pale blue sky arches overhead, devoid of clouds, showing the stark geometry of the geological formation. Sparse, dry vegetation rests on the crevices between the stone pillars, hinting at the turn of seasons. The sheer scale of the cliff face dominates the foreground, while the wide valley extends into a haze of heat shimmer, at the base of the scene in the arid landscape near Tel Aviv. Shadows fall sharply along the base of the columns, defining their depth against the bright earth.
