Tyrolean Columnar Basalt at Sunset Mist in in Tyrol

Tyrolean Columnar Basalt at Sunset Mist

by Vicki Wells

Vertical hexagonal basalt columns rise from a misty slope in the Tyrol, their gray surfaces softened by the low angle of sunset. Thick fog rests on the rock face, obscuring the base and blending the stone into the early spring landscape. Golden light wraps around the horizon, casting a warm glow on the upper edges of the pillars while the lower sections remain in cool shadow. The air appears dense and still, with no visible movement in the heavy mist. Individual cracks between the stones catch the fading sunlight, highlighting the rough texture against the smooth haze. One dark crevice runs vertically down the center of the nearest column, separating the illuminated face from the shadowed side.
