Dolerite Columns at Dawn Over Tibetan Foothills in from a ridge above layered foothills in Tibet

Dolerite Columns at Dawn Over Tibetan Foothills

by Tammy Mills

Pale morning light strikes the horizon haze, illuminating a jagged ridge where dark dolerite columns rise in rigid vertical lines. Early winter air leaves the layered foothills below in soft, cool blue shadows, against the sharp, wind-carved edges of the stone. Dramatic clouds gather overhead, their undersides brushed with the first gold of sunrise. The columns stand in rhythmic isolation against the vast sky, their rough, weathered surfaces catching the low sun. One column at the far right edge casts a long, thin shadow across the pale, frost-dusted rock face.
