Aerial View of Hexagonal Basalt Columns Near Athens

by Jeffery Osborne

Silvery winter light washes over a vast expanse of geometric basalt columns viewed from high above. The hexagonal stones form a tight, tessellated mosaic stretching toward the horizon, their gray surfaces catching the faint glow of a clearing storm. Deep in the night, the pattern remains distinct against the dark earth. Below the columnar formation, river meanders curve in pale ribbons, their water reflecting the cool sky. Late spring air has left the ground damp but clear. The sharp edges of the stone contrast with the soft, winding paths of the water. One ridge of rock rises sharply at the far edge, marking the boundary between the stone floor and the open valley.
