Columnar Basalt Tidal Waterfall Autumn Valley in across a wide valley floor near Quito

Columnar Basalt Tidal Waterfall Autumn Valley

by Anthony Holcomb

Brilliant blue sky stretches endlessly above a rugged valley floor near Quito. A massive formation of hexagonal basalt columns rises vertically from the earth, their dark grey surfaces etched with sharp geometric lines. The rock face catches the harsh early afternoon sun, creating stark contrasts between the illuminated edges and deep, cool shadows in the crevices. Autumn colors surround the stone in patches of rust-red and golden-brown foliage clinging to the valley slopes. The low angle emphasizes the towering height of the columnar structure against the open sky. A small cascade of water tumbles over the top of the basalt, forming a tidal waterfall that glints like silver ribbons against the dark stone. at the edge is the rough, porous texture of the wet rock surface where the water drips down.
