Basalt Organ Pipes on Sea Cliff at Dawn in across a floodplain after rain near Cape Town

Basalt Organ Pipes on Sea Cliff at Dawn

by Pierce Quintero

Deep violet shadows blanket the vertical basalt columns rising from the rugged sea cliff edge. A sharp rim of pale gold light traces the uppermost edges of the hexagonal stone pillars, separating them from the darkening sky. Below, the wet floodplain reflects the muted gray of the morning, its surface smooth and glassy from recent rain. Layers of sea haze drift across the horizon, softening the distant coastline into a pale band of blue-gray. The dry season holds the foreground grasses in brittle, brown clumps, against the sleek, dark stone. The columns stand in rigid rows, their geometric precision emphasized by the low angle of the first light catching only their tips. A thin line of white foam rests on the base where the dark water meets the rock.
