Bracket Fungus on Fallen Oak Near Harbin Cliff

by Erin Levine

Bright late-afternoon light cuts through a light drizzle to illuminate a bracket fungus clinging to a fallen oak log. The wood lies horizontally along a salt-sprayed cliff edge, its bark rough and darkened by moisture. Early summer moss spreads across the damp surface in patches of vivid green, against the fungus's layered gray and tan caps. Tiny water droplets bead on the fungal texture, reflecting the sky above. Salt crystals sparkle faintly on the rough bark beside the log. The background dissolves into a soft haze of pale blue sky and a distant, blurred cliff face. One shadow falls across the lower right corner of the fungus cap.
