Puffball Mushroom Spores at Dawn Syria in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge in Syria

Puffball Mushroom Spores at Dawn Syria

by Gavin Conway

A low sun hangs just above the horizon haze, painting the sky in pale apricot and soft grey tones. Along the salt-sprayed cliff edge in Syria, a single puffball mushroom stands silhouetted against the brightening light. Its rounded, pale cap releases a fine cloud of spores that drift upward into the morning air. The rough, weathered stone of the cliff face appears dark and textured beneath the fungus. Midsummer heat is absent in the cool, clear dawn light, leaving the scene still and quiet. Tiny white particles catch the golden rays, creating a shimmering veil around the dark form of the mushroom cap. The edge of the rock drops away sharply into the distance, at the base of the fragile life against the vast, open sky.
