Blue Hour Puffball Mushroom Spore Release

by Megan Atkins

Wet ground glistens under the deep indigo wash of late autumn blue hour near Lalitpur. One weather-beaten puffball mushroom stands centered, its pale beige surface dotted with rain droplets that catch the faint reflected light from nearby water. A dense cloud of fine spores erupts from the mushroom's top, swirling in the suspended moisture of a brief sun shower. The surrounding earth is dark and saturated, against the soft, diffuse glow illuminating the spore cloud. Tiny ripples in the background water mirror the twilight sky, creating a shimmering silver path that ends at the base of the fungal stem. one drop of water rests on the rough edge of the mushroom cap, reflecting the dim sky above.
