Rain Beads in Lichen on Bark
by Imani Greer
Pale dawn light spills across a woven linen surface, illuminating a cluster of translucent rain droplets clinging to textured green lichen on rough tree bark. The water beads remain perfectly spherical, refracting the soft morning glow into tiny, distorted highlights against the deep brown ridges of the wood. Fine gray threads of the linen weave run diagonally beneath the bark, creating a subtle grid that anchors the organic forms. Cool season air has left the lichen with a matte, dusty finish, contrasting the wet, glossy sheen of the droplets. Quiet shadows stretch along the unseen walls, framing the specimen in a pocket of stillness. One droplet hangs precariously at the edge of a bark fissure, its surface tension holding the light in a perfect, trembling sphere.
