Hen of the Woods Mushroom on Oak Base in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Alor Setar

Hen of the Woods Mushroom on Oak Base

by Kane Lester

Raindrops rest on the layered, fan-like caps of a large hen of the woods mushroom growing directly from the rough, dark bark of an oak tree. The forest floor near the salt-sprayed cliff edge glistens with wet moss and scattered fallen leaves. Dappled morning light falls through the canopy, illuminating patches of the mushroom's gray and tan scales while leaving other sections in soft shadow. Water beads on the fungus surfaces, reflecting the cool, overcast sky above. The shallow depth of field blurs the distant greenery, keeping focus sharp on the texture of the oak roots and the wet, overlapping tiers of the fungus. one drop of water slides down a cap edge.
