Shiitake Log on Salt Spray Cliff Edge in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Manchester

Shiitake Log on Salt Spray Cliff Edge

by Matteo Sullivan

Soft, diffused light falls through the canopy onto a weathered oak log resting against a rugged cliff face. The wood surface is deeply fissured, its gray bark stripped in patches to reveal the lighter grain beneath. Clusters of brown-capped shiitake mushrooms emerge from the drilled holes, their stems thick and sturdy. A fine mist of salt spray coats the nearby rocks, glistening where the rain has just ceased. The ground is dry and dusty, scattered with fallen pine needles and small stones. The cliff edge drops away sharply, exposing a stark, raw texture of layered stone. One mushroom cap reflects the pale sky in a subtle, wet sheen.
