Bracket Fungus on Fallen Oak in Gonaïves Garden
by Dana Ward
Sunlight pierces through the humid canopy, illuminating a layered bracket fungus clinging to the weathered bark of a fallen oak. The fungus displays rough, concentric ridges in shades of charcoal and rust against the pale gray wood. Surrounding the tree, terraced garden plots descend in stepped rows, their dark soil glistening with recent monsoon rain. Low-lying ground fog pools in the depressions between the terraces, softening the transition to the background. The late afternoon light casts long, sharp shadows across the stepped earth, highlighting the texture of the moss and the wetness of the leaves. The fungus sits centrally, framed by ample negative space that emphasizes its solitary presence against the sprawling agricultural landscape. One droplet of water rests on the lower edge of the fungal shelf, reflecting the gray sky above.
