Blue Whale Surfaces Through Kelp Forest in through a forest of kelp fronds near Walled City, Cartagena

Blue Whale Surfaces Through Kelp Forest

by Lucy Christian

Cool blue twilight washes the open ocean surface near Cartagena, where a massive blue whale breaks through a dense forest of kelp fronds. The animal's dark, wet skin glistens under the fading evening light, its head rising just enough to exhale a fine misty spout into the air. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the long, flowing green fronds of the kelp swaying gently in slow-moving ripples. Depth of field blurs the background into soft shades of indigo and teal, isolating the whale's smooth form against the underwater vegetation. A final spray of droplets catches the last light, hanging momentarily before falling back into the calm, rain-season sea.
