Dried Octopus Hooks Oregon Sunset in beside a volcanic drop-off in Oregon

Dried Octopus Hooks Oregon Sunset

by Simon Watts

Amber sunset light spills across a volcanic cliffside in Oregon, illuminating rows of dried octopus suspended from rusted metal hooks. The leathery, shriveled skins hang limp, their tentacles curling inward against the dark basalt backdrop. Below, exceptionally clear water moves in slow, heavy ripples, catching the fading gold of the horizon. The turn of seasons leaves the air still and the light low, casting long shadows that stretch across the wet rock. Each hook bites into the cliff edge, securing the seafood against the wind. One ripple breaks the surface, distorting the reflection of the hanging forms before settling back into the deep, transparent blue.
