Columnar Basalt at Tidal Waterfall Shore in along a wave-cut shoreline in Uttarakhand

Columnar Basalt at Tidal Waterfall Shore

by Brenda Holmes

Soft overcast light flattens the colors of a wave-cut shoreline in early spring Uttarakhand. Vertical columns of dark grey basalt rise from the churning water, their hexagonal faces weathered by constant tidal motion. White foam crests against the stone, whipped into streaks by the wind. The water moves with a blur of grey and white, contrasting the rigid, geometric lines of the rock. Mist rests on the surface of the stream, softening the distant banks. The composition strips away all background elements, leaving only the interplay between the flowing water and the ancient stone. One ripple breaks the surface near the base of the nearest column, catching the diffuse light.
