Advection Fog Over Tsuruhashi Ocean Dawn in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads near Tsuruhashi, Osaka

Advection Fog Over Tsuruhashi Ocean Dawn

by Phyllis Harper

Deep shadow blankets the horizon where stacked thunderheads rise near Tsuruhashi, Osaka, under a midsummer nautical dawn. A thick band of advection fog rolls across the cold ocean current, its white mass illuminated by a sharp rim light that traces the crests of the waves. A solitary crack splits a vertical wall in the foreground, defying all plumbing logic, as a waterfall pours from it directly into the sea. Light drizzle creates a fine mist around the falling water, blurring the line between the impossible cascade and the natural fog. The diagonal composition stretches from the wet stone wall across the churning dark water to the distant cloud layer. A reflection of the waterfall’s white stream shimmers on the oily surface of the ocean.
