Midnight Lighthouse Staircase on Cape Town Swells

by Edith Silva

Moonlight fractures across the dark ocean swells, creating silver paths that stretch toward the horizon. A stone staircase emerges from the cliff edge, splitting into two distinct flights that descend simultaneously into the same landing while another flight ascends from that same point. The beam from a nearby lighthouse sweeps across the wet rocks, illuminating the impossible geometry with sharp, rhythmic intervals. Dry, scrubby vegetation rests on the cliff face under a perfectly clear, starless night sky. The water churns with white foam where the waves break against the base of the stairs. The stone steps show deep texture, wet and slick, reflecting the stark white light against the obsidian sea. One rail runs along the ascending side, disappearing into the mist before reappearing on the descending path.
