Basalt Plateau Dawn Storm Reflections in across a floodplain after rain near Fukuoka

Basalt Plateau Dawn Storm Reflections

by Lindsey Hull

Misty gray light washes over a jagged basalt plateau bordering a churning sea in late spring. The dark, hexagonal rock columns rise from a wet floodplain near Fukuoka, their surfaces slick with a fine drizzle that blurs the edges of the stone. Puddles scattered across the foreground capture inverted images of the heavy clouds and the rough horizon line, creating a seamless mirrored composition where the sky and sea appear to merge. The texture of the basalt stretches from the immediate foreground deep into the hazy distance, defined by the soft, diffused dawn glow. Wind-sculpted crevices hold small pools of water that reflect the muted blue-gray tones of the overcast sky, ending in a sharp line where the wet rock meets the foaming tide.
