Wombat Emerging from Burrow Amidst Estonian Spring Mist in beside a tidal inlet in Estonia

Wombat Emerging from Burrow Amidst Estonian Spring Mist

by Edward Fisher

Cool, diffused dawn light falls through a thin layer of mist hovering over the tidal inlet shoreline. A wombat with coarse, dark fur pushes its head through the opening of a burrow dug into the muddy bank. Beside the entrance, grey concrete slabs of a weathered breakwater show deep fissures where vibrant pink and yellow spring flowers erupt directly from the stone. The ground remains wet from a brief sun shower, reflecting the pale sky. The animal pauses with ears alert, its eyes fixed on the water. Tiny droplets rest on the petals of the impossible blooms, while the rough texture of the concrete contrasts sharply with the soft, living colors of the flowers growing from the cracks.
