Meerkat at Burrow Entrance Near Gaborone Tidal Inlet

by Callie Holcomb

Flat noon light washes the landscape in a uniform, silver-gray tone after a recent rain. A meerkat stands alert at the mouth of a sandy burrow, its fur appearing dark and matted with moisture against the pale earth. The ground is slick and uneven, dotted with small puddles reflecting the overcast sky. In the background, a tidal inlet stretches horizontally, its water level high and still, bordered by sparse, wet grasses that sway slightly. Distant haze hangs low on the horizon, softening the line where the land meets the sky. The animal's claws grip the damp soil as it surveys the flat, open terrain. One droplet slides down the side of the burrow mound and vanishes into the cracked mud.
