Numbat Foraging in Misty Dawn Light in beside a tidal inlet near Monterrey

Numbat Foraging in Misty Dawn Light

by Svetlana Gates

Misty gray light falls through the damp air beside a tidal inlet, illuminating a numbat moving low to the ground. The animal’s striped coat stands out against the muted greens of early spring grasses, which bend sharply under the force of the wind. From behind, the numbat extends its long snout toward the earth, nose buried in the soil as it searches for termites. Fine ripples disturb the water’s surface in the background, while the grass blades twist and sway in the gusts. The creature remains still despite the chaos around it, its posture focused and intent. One blade of grass catches the pale light near the animal’s hindquarters, highlighting the texture of its fur.
