Wombat Emerging from Burrow in Cappadocia Fog in at the edge of a reed bed in Cappadocia

Wombat Emerging from Burrow in Cappadocia Fog

by Kathryn Stafford

Deep shadow engulfs the foreground where a wombat pushes its furry, dark head from a rough earthen burrow. A sharp rim light traces the curve of its back, separating its silhouette from the soft, grey ground fog pooling in the low reeds. Late summer grasses stand tall and dry around the opening, their tips catching the faint glow of distant city lights that begin to flicker on the horizon. The soil texture is coarse and layered, showing recent digging marks. The animal's small, rounded ears twitch slightly against the dimming sky. The fog creates a hazy, translucent barrier between the burrow and the darkening reed bed beyond.
