South African Canal Lock Gate After Rain in at a canal lock chamber in South Africa

South African Canal Lock Gate After Rain

by Garrett Nash

Steel plates of the lock gate stand heavy against the inky black water of the canal chamber. Rain has left a slick sheen on the riveted surfaces, where rust streaks run vertically down the grey metal. The water is still, reflecting the harsh brightness of the late morning sky. Heat shimmer distorts the air above the sun-baked concrete edges, creating a wavy veil over the scene. Strong leading lines formed by the gate's frame and the canal walls draw the gaze toward the dark water beyond. Every bolt and welded seam shows the practical wear of constant operation. one drop of water rests on the edge of a metal beam before falling into the channel below.
