Tree Through Chapel Floor in Guacara in along a monastery corridor in Guacara

Tree Through Chapel Floor in Guacara

by Charles Cruz

Stained beams of red, blue, and amber light slice across the cracked concrete floor of an abandoned chapel corridor in Guacara. A mature tree erupts from a jagged fracture in the masonry, its gnarled roots gripping the broken stone. The wet season leaves fresh green moss clinging to the damp, dark edges of the split floor. Dust motes hang suspended in the colored shafts, illuminating the rough bark texture against the smooth, peeling plaster walls. Sunlight falls through high stained glass windows, casting geometric patches of jewel-toned color that shift across the wet ground. The trunk leans slightly, supported by the weight of the surrounding ruins, while a shallow puddle near the base reflects the fractured ceiling above. the mix of light and shadow defines the space, ending in the sharp contrast of a root tip pressing against a crumbling wall tile.
