Banyan Roots on Stone in Incheon Chapel

by Ruth Dalton

Late autumn light falls through stained glass panels, casting patches of crimson, amber, and deep violet across a weathered stone surface. Thick, fibrous banyan roots have grown over carved figures, their rough bark against the smooth, eroded masonry. The perspective looks upward from a low angle, showing the verticality of the roots as they rest on the ancient structure. Dust motes float in the narrow beams of colored light that slice through the dim interior. Shadows stretch long across the floor, where fallen brown leaves rest against the base of the stone. A jagged crack in the carving catches a sharp line of red light, highlighting the texture of the decay.
