Faded Frescoes in Neon Light in along a monastery corridor in Golmud

Faded Frescoes in Neon Light

by Carl Smith

Pale blue and violet neon hues wash over the crumbling plaster of a dilapidated chapel corridor in Golmud. Peeling frescoes reveal layers of decay, where ancient pigments flake away to expose rough brick beneath. Condensation beads along the nearby glass panes, distorting the faint glow from the corridor lights. The early autumn air leaves a damp sheen on the stone floor, reflecting the fractured colors of the ceiling. Wide panoramic framing shows the full expanse of the corridor, showing the silence of the pre-dawn hours. One crack runs through a painted halo, splitting the saint's gaze into two fractured halves. The texture of the damp wall contrasts sharply with the smooth, cold surface of the glass.
