Tree Growing Through Chapel Floor in Espoo in along a monastery corridor in Espoo

Tree Growing Through Chapel Floor in Espoo

by Breanna Sparks

Honey-colored light from high windows spills across a worn stone floor in an abandoned monastery corridor in Espoo. A solitary tree erupts directly from a jagged opening in the masonry, its bark rough and dark against the pale, weathered stone. The trunk splits into slender branches that reach upward, catching the low sun as it drops toward the horizon. Muted reflections of the light shimmer on the polished floor surfaces, stretching along the length of the corridor. The symmetrical architecture frames the organic intrusion, with moss clinging to the base of the tree where it meets the ancient floor. The brief arctic summer keeps the leaves a vibrant, fresh green, against the gray tones of the ruined interior.
