Tree Growing Through Chapel Floor in Quetta

by Ricardo Ritter

Stained light falls through colored glass panes, painting patches of amber and deep blue across the rough stone floor of an abandoned chapel in Quetta. A mature tree rises directly from a jagged breach in the masonry, its roots cracking the ancient flagstones. The bark is textured with deep fissures, contrasting against the smooth, worn surface of the surrounding stone. Dust motes hang suspended in the slanted midday beams, illuminating the space where the wood meets the masonry. In the shadowed corners, the faint glow of unlit oil lamps settles against the dark walls, adding quiet gravity. at the edge is a small cluster of dry leaves resting on a broken stone step near the trunk.
