Surreal Tree Light in Lilongwe Synagogue

by Ida Shepard

Cool, pre-dawn window light spills through stained glass, painting the wooden synagogue pews in shifting patches of deep blue, violet, and amber. Beside a carved Torah ark, a living tree grows horizontally out of the stone wall, its green leaves fully healthy and illuminated by the same colored beams. Rain-slicked glass panes frame the impossible branch, which extends across the room without breaking the wall's integrity. Dust motes float in the vibrant shafts, settling on the polished floorboards. The horizontal roots appear to grip the masonry as if naturally embedded, casting sharp, colored shadows that stretch toward the entrance. one drop of condensation hangs from a leaf tip, catching the violet glow.
