Tree Growing Through Chapel Floor in Coro

by Abigail James

Honey-colored light streams through high windows, illuminating a gnarled tree trunk that rises directly from a cracked stone floor. The bark is rough and textured, against the smooth, weathered tiles surrounding its base. Deep shadows stretch along the whitewashed walls of the cloister passage, marking the late afternoon hour. Raindrops rest on the exterior of the window panes, blurring the view of the rainy season sky outside. The ceiling above shows signs of age with peeling plaster, while the tree's green leaves reach toward the light source. A small puddle forms near the roots where water has seeped through the masonry. at the edge is a crack in the stone that runs from the base of the trunk toward the dark corner of the room.
