Tree Root Breaks Chapel Floor in Wuhan Cloister

by Jeanette Merritt

Pale morning light floods the quiet cloister passage, bouncing off smooth, off-white walls to illuminate a massive tree trunk rising directly through the cracked stone floor. The wood, textured with deep vertical fissures and patches of moss, splits the grey tiles as it pushes upward. Sunlight catches the polished sheen of the surrounding masonry, creating sharp, small highlights along the base of the trunk. Late summer green leaves cluster at the top of the frame, filtering the light into dappled patterns on the ancient, dust-covered stones. A deep fissure runs along the edge of the broken tile, revealing dark earth beneath the polished surface where the roots grip the foundation.
