Spiraling Jack Fish Tornado Over Coral Reef

by Lane Nicholson

Soft midday light falls through wet-season water, illuminating a dense vortex of jack fish swirling around a jagged coral pinnacle. The school forms a tight, vertical column of silver bodies against the deep blue backdrop of the Cebu reef wall. Fine plankton haze blurs the distant water, creating a soft, ethereal separation between the sharp foreground scales and the background void. Individual fish flash with iridescent highlights as they rotate in unison, their movements creating a rhythmic, fluid pattern. The coral surface beneath the vortex displays rough, textured ridges in muted oranges and browns, against the sleek, metallic sheen of the swimming fish. One shadow falls across the lower reef structure, at the base of the swirling motion in the solid stone.
