Brilliant caustic light patterns dance across the dark, rough texture of a volcanic reef overhang near Stone Town. A dense school of juvenile fish forms a shimmering, dark silhouette against the intense backlight filtering through clear tropical water. The water surface above shows slow, rhythmic ripples that fracture the sunlight into moving grids of white and gold. Fine sand and small coral fragments rest on the rocky ledge below the swarming fish. The monsoon season brings exceptional clarity, allowing the sharp edges of the volcanic rock to stand out against the glowing water column. One fish turns, its outline catching a flash of reflected light before it rejoins the school.
