Night School of Fusiliers Along Cebu Reef in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Cebu

Night School of Fusiliers Along Cebu Reef

by Terry Knapp

Silver fusiliers stream in a dense, fluid ribbon along the vertical face of a coral wall. The water transitions from the textured, shadowed reef structure to deep, inky blue beyond. Faint starlight falls through the surface, casting a soft, cool glow that highlights the shimmering scales of the fish. Suspended particles glitter like distant stars within the water column, showing depth. The school moves in unison, their bodies reflecting the dim ambient light against the dark backdrop of the night. Individual scales catch the faint illumination, revealing subtle iridescent tones. A cluster of small coral polyps anchors the reef edge in the foreground, their shapes defined by the low light. The water remains still except for the rhythmic undulation of the fish.
